TikTok vs. Instagram Reels: Which Platform Earns More on Clippers?
The Data
We analyzed performance data from over 10,000 clips submitted across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts between July and December 2024.
Views: TikTok Wins
TikTok clips averaged 3.2x more views than equivalent clips on Instagram Reels. TikTok's algorithm is uniquely effective at surfacing content to non-followers.
Engagement: Instagram Reels Wins
Despite lower view counts, Instagram Reels generated 40% higher engagement rates (likes, comments, saves) than TikTok clips. Instagram users interact more intentionally with content.
Shares: TikTok Wins by a Landslide
TikTok clips were shared 5x more often than Reels. The "Send to" and Stitch/Duet mechanics make sharing frictionless.
Comments: Instagram Reels Wins
Reels generated 60% more comments per view than TikTok. Comment quality also tended to be higher — more detailed, more conversational.
Which Earns More on Clippers?
Because shares count 3x in the Clippers performance formula, TikTok's sharing advantage translates directly into higher performance scores.
Average performance score by platform:
- TikTok: 847 (normalized)
- Instagram Reels: 612
- YouTube Shorts: 448
The Verdict
For pure payout maximization: TikTok first. For building a high-engagement audience that sustains long-term earnings: both TikTok and Instagram in combination.
Clippers who post on both platforms average 58% higher monthly payouts than single-platform clippers.
